Garlic
Allium sativum. Seed quality garlic tested for nematode bloat and fungal pathogens. Spicy and delicious! 40-65 cloves per lb.
Music - White skinned with just a blush of pink, this garlic makes big cloves that are easy to peel. The taste is a medium hot, true garlic flavor. Exceptional shelf life for a Porcelain type, Music will store 9 months to a year. Very cold tolerant. Performs best in zone 5-7.
German Red - An old world variety with a full flavored velvety taste. We’ve selected to remove double cloves but some remain. The garlic makes up for it in taste. This golden garlic adds a deep aromatic flavor to stews, winter vegetables, roasts and wild game. German Red has a complex and unique flavor that stands out in a dish without overwhelming other flavors. Try roasting this garlic and you will not be disappointed. Performs best in zone 5-7.
Chesnock Red - Taste test winner. Excellent roasted and fried. Medium pungency. Very cold tolerant. 9-12 cloves per head. Heads trend smaller than Music and German Red but ever so tasty. Performs best in zone 5-7.
Culinary/medicinal - 1-2” bulbs of our lovely garlic. Undergoes the same seed quality testing as the rest of our garlic, but are a little on the smaller side so won’t produce as large of bulbs if planted and may not have the right number of cloves per head. If you have a type in mind to try specify in your order note and we’ll select which one you’d like if it is available. Here’s a wonderful honey fermented garlic recipe to try.
Planting Guide - Garlic is best fall planted. As long as the ground is thawed it can be planted though and we’ve done it as late as late December during a snow storm here in Michigan with success. We recommend planting sooner to save your fingers. Plant in well draining soil with moderate to high fertility. Garlic is a heavy feeder and must be fertilized before the 4 leaf stage which comes up before you know it so fertilize when you plant as it is growing slowly through the winter. Plant garlic cloves pointy side up. We use short pieces of garden hose to push the clove into the soil if it is soft enough or garden dibblers to make holes around 3-6 inches deep. Depending on your soil and climate deeper will keep the cloves from frost-heave and protect the new growth but too deep will make harvest difficult. Space cloves 4-6” apart in rows 8-18” apart. Denser spacing with good fertility may be possible and yield more lbs per bed but more ample spacing will produce larger heads. Many farmers mulch their garlic with straw with good success.
